Family History
The Heartlin family stretches back many, many generations. Curiously, the family passes the name through women, from wife to husband. The family's made it pretty clear over the years that it's matriarchal, and at this point it's just become tradition.
The Heartlin name can be traced back to Scotland, beginning as the Hartlynns. Her name has been lost to time, but the first Hartlynn was revered as a prolific and adept physical and spiritual healer in her small village, down in the lowlands of the countryside. In modern times she'd be known as a nurse and therapist, who was particularly good at helping people through their emotional thought process.
Fast forward to around 1850 or so, a woman by the name of Fionnuala Hartlynn was the matriarch of a family of 8 daughters. Arya, Aliyah, April, Edith, Kara, Maisie, Lillie, and Taylor. Each of them went off to their own lives, some emigrating to different parts of the world, some staying locally in Scotland. Arya and Aliyah emigrated to America, where their name was anglicized to the Heartlin we know and love. April and Maisie stayed in Scotland, and Lillie moved next door to Britain, all of which kept the Hartlynn surname. Edith and Kara left with Arya and Aliyah, but they ended up moving to Canada, with their name changing to Heartlynne. Finally, Taylor left to Australia, taking Heartlynn as her name.
However, the most notable Heartlin for us at this point would be Arya, Finn's great-grandmother. She had five children, including Orchid, who in turn had two, Roxanne and Diane. Finally, Roxanne had Avery, and Finn, three years later.
You may have noticed it by now, but there was a small abnormality in naturally-born Heartlins-
Every one of them, for as long as any family historian can trace them, was born female. That is, of course, until Roxanne birthed Finn 23 years ago! He was the literal golden boy of the Heartlin family, and was seen as a breaking of the "curse"!
